Fishing in Tenerife
A fun and relaxing activity at the same time.
Have fun fishing in Tenerife
A day of fishing in Tenerife, enjoying its rich waters, is the ideal complement to your holiday. Whether on board a charter (pleasure boat rental with or without a skipper) or from land with your own equipment, the island has plenty of fishing grounds for all tastes.
We are going to propose some ideas to make your fishing expedition as fruitful and entertaining as possible.
Patience, dedication and observation make a good fisherman.
If you are looking to fish on your own, the first thing you have to take into account are the licenses. For any type of recreational fishing in the Canary Islands a license is needed, the most common being Type 3.
For a small price, practically any municipality on the islands can process this permit that enables you to do surface fishing from the coast or in a boat, with a catch of maximum weight of up to ten kilos of goods in total.
Apart from this, you will always have to respect the minimum authorized measurements. These can be consulted in the town halls and fishermen’s guilds where, generally, they usually have a free brochure with all the sizes and fish subject to these regulations.
The best fishing grounds in Tenerife
In addition to the above, you only need to take your rod and your desire to fish, although, to make the job easier for you, we have compiled several fishing grounds and charters to help make your experience as good as possible.
Los Gigantes: A fairly busy area with breathtaking views thanks to its cliffs. It is perfect for fishing, especially before or near dawn. When you finish your fishing day you can relax and get on board one of the many boats that make excursions in the area to see the cetaceans that frequent this place.
Roque Bermejo: At the opposite end of the island, in the Anaga area, to the northeast, in a coastal area surrounded by very little population. With abundant vegetation thanks to its remote location, it is a very quiet enclave. We are in front of the area with the most exuberant nature on the island: Anaga. To get there we will have to make a somewhat long way by car but the views, tranquility and fish are more than worth the trip. We must bear in mind that it is a territory of quite rocky bottoms so have spare weights for the eventual loss of one or two.
Crab Mouth: It is a more central fishing ground, just half an hour’s drive south from the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A rocky area in a very cozy small coastal town. Night fishing is the preferred choice. It is better to enjoy it with some friends and something to eat as it requires special patience at any time of the year. On the other hand, the catches have nothing to envy to those of any other area.
Mesa del Mar: With magnificent views of several cliffs, Puerto de la Cruz and Mount Teide, before us a small town made up of just a few buildings. With an abundance of mullets and mullets almost all year round, night mullet fishing from the beach is preferred by locals. It is a fairly safe coastline for the whole family in the summer months due to its excellent maintenance and lifeguard service so you can relax fishing while the little ones play in the puddles and sand, especially at low tide.

If you prefer to go fishing by boat
Fishing in Tenerife with a boat is a more expensive method but brings the following advantages to the table;
- You don’t need to have any license like the one mentioned above and the most sought-after catches such as billfish and tuna are much easier to find.
- The charter service is available especially in the southern part of the island. The excursions are usually an average of three hours of fishing. They generally have drinks included and there is the possibility of spotting dolphins and other cetaceans in the area so that, even if you don’t manage to catch too much, you still have a good memory of the outing.
Here are some of the available charters:
The Rodfather: With perfect service and a standard price per person, this Puerto Colon charter has two daily 4-hour departures, in the morning and afternoon, in a perfect area to see dolphins that usually swim alongside the boat. In season you can fish for billfish, mackerel and frigate tuna.
No Limits Tenerife Fishing: Located in Costa Adeje, this charter sails through an area full of tuna. It offers several daily departures and options for half a day, three-quarter or a full day of fishing on the south west coast of Tenerife.
Canary Adventure Fishing Experience: Departing from Puerto Colón, they have a higher price per person. It provides fishing with first-class brand materials and a crew that will teach you and help you fish with a variety of fishing techniques. As a bonus, they will have a barbecue with the freshly caught fish on private outings (although these have a considerably higher price compared to normal outings). They have three daily departures of 4 hours in the morning, afternoon and evening.

The list doesn't end there!
Sea Passion Charters: Based in Playa San Juan, this charter with capacity for up to 8 people offers to accompany your fishing trips, stops at beautiful places to take a swim, cool off and relax. You’ll spend some time swimming and snorkeling in remote sites away from the hustle and bustle of the most common beaches.
White Tuna Tenerife: Finally, White Tuna Tenerife has departures from the beautiful beach of Las Galletas. The most expensive charter on the list, it offers private tours run by local captains with decades of experience in the art of fishing. These excursions are 8 hours long and for a maximum of 5 people. They include first-class equipment and local-style refreshments. Reaching up to the incredible distance of 6 miles from the coast (about 11 kilometers) they also offer whale, dolphin and turtle watching. You will go hunting for barracudas, tuna and mahi mahi. They have diving goggles at the customer’s disposal and a large sunbathing area at the bow.
Remember that:
- The minimum size lists are updated annually and can usually be consulted free of charge on the website of the Government of the Canary Islands.
- The vieja is a variety of Parrotfish present in the Canary Islands quite popular among locals for its quality and flavor, although it is somewhat more difficult to catch. A fish that you must try at least once on your visit to the island.
- Marlin is undoubtedly the most sought-after piece by all anglers. The strength, endurance and size of this fish make it the perfect candidate for an unforgettable fishing experience. You will get a beautiful photo to take back home to hang and show the family.
This is just part of the variety of the abundant Canarian marine fauna. The sea does not end there, explore the wonderful coasts of the island to discover all kinds of fishing grounds and beaches that will captivate you without a doubt.
