Puerto de la Cruz is the key point to get to know the north of the island of Tenerife: it is located in the centre of the north, just 30 or 40 minutes from both ends. In the far west, Teno, Garachico and other municipalities of the lower island; in the extreme east is Santa Cruz, La Laguna and the Anaga rural park.

Puerto de la Cruz is the ideal place to get to know a side of Tenerife that is totally different from that of the south and an extensive and varied gastronomic offer. It is close to other municipalities where you can try the most typical food of the island, in the well-known guachinches of Santa Úrsula for example.

What does Puerto de la Cruz offer?

Essentials in Puerto de la Cruz

On your visit to Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz has a number of must-see places that you must visit and that will make your holiday a unique experience. The first and best known internationally is Loro Parque, which since its opening in 1972 has not stopped reaping success and receiving thousands of tourists.

Although it was originally inaugurated as an exclusive park for parrots, over the years a long list of different species have been incorporated (lions, alligators, red pandas, hippos, dolphins, killer whales…). You will find within the grounds attractions such as Naturavision, Kinderlandia, Katandra Treetops, the Zen Garden, the Aquarium and various restaurants and shops.

Another must-see in Puerto de la Cruz that you can’t miss is Lake Martianez, a complex with seven swimming pools and a large lake, filled with seawater and surrounded by gardens and hammocks. In addition, it was designed by the artist and sculptor César Manrique, who sought harmony between art and nature.

Climate in Puerto de la Cruz

The climate of the north of Tenerife, being more humid, makes it greener than the south of the island. However, in Puerto de la Cruz, this is combined with the proximity to the coast, providing the municipality with a Softness and thermal stability throughout the year. Temperatures are pleasant even in the winter months: the annual average ranges between 17 and 25ºC. That is why the beach can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The sea in Tenerife north has a milder swell in the summer and autumn months, due to the currents that come from the Atlantic, ideal for swimming. In winter and spring the waves are stronger, being perfect for practicing some water sports such as surfing.

What to do in Puerto de la Cruz for free?

Throughout the year there are many events in the streets of Puerto de la Cruz that you don’t have to pay to attend: Mueca, Beer Festivals… In addition, not all venues and nightclubs charge admission to go out at night.

Likewise, to enjoy Puerto de la Cruz for free you just have to go out on the street. Strolling through its streets is a more than satisfactory plan, as you will enjoy the climate and the architecture of its historic buildings. If you prefer, you can also do it along its promenades next to the beach or even on the sand itself. A great swim on the beach is the best fun and for free.
