It is quite easy and common to practice Surfing in Tenerife. The beaches in the south of the island offer long stretches of sandy bottoms, rock, and volcanic reefs or various combinations thereof.
The island is full of surfers of all ages and levels who come to try its wonderful waters, as well as hosting multiple surf schools and camps to learn and enjoy your hobby while making friends.

Here are some of the best places to surf in Tenerife:
Benijo: To the northeast of the sandy bottom island, this spot is for intermediate or expert surfers. The waves accompany all year round, the wind is generally south or southeast and the best times of the day for practice are at rising or high tide.
El Roquete: A little further south in Punta del Hidalgo, with a stone bottom, this beach is perfect for beginners. The best seasons for surfing are autumn, winter and spring. The wind is usually south, southeast or southwest and the best hours of the day are at low or falling tide. It should be noted that half an hour away there are two quite similar locations called Los Dos Hermanos and La Bajeta where you can change the scenery if one of them is full of people.
Mesa del Mar: Continuing our path from north to south, Mesa del Mar offers a bottom of sand and stone. It has two places with different difficulties on the same beach. At the beginning of the beach you will find a rocky area of medium-high difficulty that requires high tide to be able to surf due to the large rocks at the bottom. This area has the most consistent waves. At the end of the bathing area, there is a rocky reef that requires high tide to take advantage of the waves. It is a location for beginners, with summer, spring and autumn being the optimal time. The wind in this enclave is south or southeast.
La Caleta: In the south of the island, in Adeje, with a volcanic reef-covered ground and medium difficulty, this area for intermediate and expert surfers is best enjoyed in summer during low and mid tide. The wind is usually north, east and southeast.
Las Galletas: To this beach of Arona It is best to go in summer, during low or medium tide. With a volcanic reef bottom of intermediate difficulty, and north, northeast and east winds, it is a somewhat frequented area so expect company when you go.
Las Americas: The most frequented location by far on the list. Las Americas Beach It is a very popular area where you will have an experience of intermediate difficulty in autumn, winter and spring, with north, northeast and east winds. It is best to go during high or rising tide. With volcanic reef bottoms, in a very touristy area of the island.

If you want to learn and meet people surfing in Tenerife, we recommend the following surf schools:
La Marea Surf School: This Canarian school is recognized by the Canarian Surf Federation. It offers all kinds of introductory and more advanced courses for children and adults. Based in front of Martiánez beach in Puerto de la Cruz, it also has board rental. Rates include instructors and equipment in two shifts: morning and afternoon.
Secret Surf School Tenerife: This company not only offers lessons, but also has a surf camp. Classes range from 2 hours to 10 hours. They have the possibility of booking the “surf trip” with 8 hours of surfing, lunch and equipment included, and the “surf bus”, which picks you up at your hotel so that you can attend group classes in different locations of various levels of difficulty. Surf camp is available throughout July and August. It can be paid by the week or monthly.
Franz Surf School: Based in Las Americas, this school offers tiered classes at very affordable prices. You can book group and private classes. The latter with slightly higher prices. If you don’t bring your own equipment, don’t worry, it has a wide variety of boards and wetsuits for rent.

Don't think twice and... Go for it!
Whatever your level or preference, surfing in Tenerife is accessible to you. The most common option is usually to use cork boards or body boards on many beaches in the north and fiber boards in the south. Bodysuits are recommended, but not essential and although the sea is somewhat more dangerous in winter, temperatures do not usually drop too much.
If you don’t have too much experience, try taking some lessons at any of the surf schools listed above. This way you will start off on the right foot. The waves themselves are not usually the problem, given that we do not have places with gigantic waves on the island, but the lack of experience when it comes to recognizing the dangers of the breaks. A couple of classes will take away those kinds of doubts making you feel more confident and confident in your abilities.
Surf camps in Tenerife are an excellent idea whether you want to learn or just want to focus on surfing on your holiday. Most of them take you to different beaches. You will be able to admire the beautiful Canarian landscape while surfing and making friends during your stay.
If you’re surfing on your own, remember not to be alone and away too long. Bring a friend or talk to someone who is already surfing so they know your location. Safety is not something to be taken lightly, even if the sea is generally docile. Stay alert and pay attention to the signs on the flags, especially those of jellyfish in season.
