Road Cycling in Tenerife

Bike, lungs and legs

Slope, curves and asphalt

Tenerife meets all the conditions for road bike enthusiasts to start salivating. In addition to its always pleasant climate, there is a road infrastructure that seems to have been designed specifically by and for cyclists, with great slopes and winding routes. Just imagining it, don’t you want to test your road bike in Tenerife?

In Tenerife, road cyclists feel more comfortable than anywhere else.

But it is not only that. In Tenerife, road cycling is synonymous with spectacular routes through landscapes that take your breath away, and in this case not precisely because of the technical difficulty of the route; We are referring to preserved natural spaces plagued by extinct volcanoes, primeval forests and hidden valleys.

Thus, it is logical that the road cyclist feels at ease on this island, and it is not surprising that it is the place chosen by dozens of elite athletes as their particular training ground throughout the year. Here you can climb from sea level to more than 2000 meters in a breath… If your legs and lungs allow it, of course.

The culture of road cycling is deeply rooted on the island. Here you will find all the facilities you could wish for. We invite you to test yourself with a road bike in Tenerife, whatever your level, and we suggest some routes and places to rent the bike.

The best cycling routes on the island

With the bike you mark your own path. However, there are a few road bike routes around Tenerife that stand out. For example, these three circulars.

Anaga from Santa Cruz: If you are in the capital of the island, this is a common circular route, of medium difficulty. With about 50 kilometers, it will take you flat to the north, and in San Andrés you will begin a gentle and winding ascent to El Bailadero. After a breather, the ramps grow to the Pico del Inglés (998 meters above sea level), from where the descent to La Laguna and the return to Santa Cruz will begin.

Teno from Garachico: A good way to get the best out of yourself with the road bike in Tenerife over just over 50 kilometers. You go up and up the Tanque and Erjos to the homonymous pass (1107 meters above sea level). After passing Santiago del Teide you will descend (with ramps of up to 20%) to the emblematic hamlet of Masca, and further to Buenavista and the sea. All you have to do is to flatten back to the starting point.

Costa Adeje-Vilaflor: Another circular of medium difficulty, somewhat longer (62 kilometres) and with hard climbs through characteristic volcanic terrain. In La Camella you will take the direction of Granadilla de Abona, and the terrain will become demanding, with a slope of between 6 and 16%, until you reach Vilaflor. From its 1380 meters of altitude the descent to Arona begins, to reach La Camella again and return to Costa Adeje.

Sport and tourism go hand in hand in Tenerife

The cycling enthusiast is usually misunderstood by the common mortal: he gets up early to put on his jersey and undergo the painful exercise of pedaling for kilometers and kilometers for the sole pleasure of doing so. In Tenerife, however, cycling is another way to get around and get to know the island and its charms.

And who said that cycling and a relaxed holiday are incompatible? In Tenerife, more than anywhere else, you can go to the beach or go shopping and, hours later, be giving your kidney blows on the saddle between climbs and sprockets. Spa and cycling? Of course. Guachinche and cycling? Also. The options are endless…

Whether you are a fan of the bike or if you only take it occasionally, you will discover that road cycling in Tenerife goes beyond the physical and mental demands of this sport; It is also to enjoy beautiful routes, get to know the people of Tenerife and their customs up close, and delve into their culture.

Luckily, within a radius of a few kilometres you can find everything you need to satisfy your desire to ride and climb: a good bike awaits you not far away (or they bring it to your home), and challenging road routes are, luckily, just around the corner. And the best thing is that, no matter how much you pedal, the island never ends…
