Tenerife, the promised land of golf
Golf is one of the most British sports out there, there’s no doubt about that. In Great Britain there are plenty of evergreen and perfectly tended fields; What is not so abundant is a suitable climate for the practice of such an outdoor sport. That’s why golf in Tenerife is a kind of promised land for players from all over the world.
The Canarian climate allows you to play at any time of the year.
If we add to Tenerife’s climatic excellence a certain tradition from the frequent British presence on the island and an exquisite attention to the technical issues of the courses, Tenerife stands as something like a small paradise where high-level courses abound, framed in environments that, due to their landscapes and their varied leisure offer, offer us a high quality tourist experience as a whole.
We have no less than nine golf courses in Tenerife, distributed throughout the island, although the southern area has a greater concentration. Some are part of larger hotel complexes and tourist resorts, and in other cases we find more modest courses. But in all cases there is a careful design, excellent maintenance and a well-prepared staff.
We are going to tour the island from south to north flying over some of the best places to play golf in Tenerife; Surely one of these courses is not far from your next holiday destination on the island. Will you join us?
Playing golf in Tenerife South
Several of the golf courses in Tenerife south are among the best in Spain, although we already know that there is nothing written about tastes. It is difficult to mention just three…
Golf del Sur: A benchmark since its opening in 1987. Located in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona, it is a fairly demanding 27-hole course, the black sand bunkers attract attention and the beautiful views of the Atlantic make it difficult to concentrate. When events are held at Golf del Sur, Tenerife comes to the forefront of world golf.
Abama Golf: Another essential golf in Tenerife, this time on the exclusive coastal strip of Guía de Isora. The 18-hole course was designed by Dave Thomas and is known for being quite undulating. It has the essential amenities, a golf school and truly spectacular views of La Gomera.
Golf Las Americas: Located in the area of the same name in Adeje, its 18 holes are a beautiful but complicated course (especially considering that a club card with a valid handicap is required). It has a large number of facilities and ancillary services, including what is perhaps the best accessories store in the archipelago.

Play golf in Tenerife North
The foggy north of Tenerife also has its fields, and some of them of enormous prestige. In fact, this was where the love affair between the Canary Islands and golf began.
Real Club de Golf de Tenerife: Founded in 1932 in Tacoronte by British expatriates. There are 18 holes spread over extremely undulating fairways, between which powerful trees provide shade to the course. With a medium difficulty (par 71), it is open to guests from Monday to Friday; is the closest option to play golf in Tenerife to Santa Cruz.
La Rosaleda Golf: Puerto de la Cruz is a small course, with only 9 holes, but very fun and with a beautiful surrounding landscape: banana fields, the ocean, the valley of La Orotava and Mount Teide. Ideal for beginners in the practice of this sport or to train the short game, it has professional teachers and the green fee is more than affordable.
Buenavista Golf: Known as the Severiano Ballesteros course, it is located next to the Meliá Hacienda del Conde, one of the best hotels with a golf course in Tenerife and one of the most distinguished in the area. Complex, fun, with many water hazards and some mountains in the background that take your breath away. A great little gem in the north of the island.
"It's almost impossible to remember how tragic the world can be when you're playing golf." – Robert Lynd
Take a closer look at Tenerife
Inclined by nature to seek out new challenges and discover new horizons (as long as they include a green and a bunker), the average golfer seems tailor-made for Tenerife, or Tenerife for him; He knows how to appreciate the good weather in its right measure, enjoys the priceless landscapes that surround him and takes his time to devote it to his favorite fun.
In addition, the island offers the opportunity to combine this passion with other activities, such as, to give a couple of examples, a tasting of local wine in a winery, sailing the coast in search of cetaceans or a night contemplating a sky full of stars. Or, why not, spend the rest of our time at the beach. Playing golf in Tenerife involves much more than golf.
Come and play golf, try the links, improve your skills and enjoy the practice of this sport; but don’t forget to climb Mount Teide, go down to a pool by the sea, cross the laurel forest and tour the old town of La Laguna. Make your stay in Tenerife a complete experience.
And if you’re here and haven’t come here for golf, you might want to try your hand at your skill with a club in your hand. Surely there is a field not too far from where you are right now; Get closer, find out a little and go for it. You’ll soon understand the passion fans have for miles and miles hitting a ball into a hole.
