Don't slow down during your stay in Tenerife
Most people understand a vacation as a time of rest, during which we slow down our normal pace of life and prioritize doing as little as possible. Luckily, we are not all the same… The most active visitors will find that they can keep up with the pace of sport in Tenerife. Almost anyone.
Sport is a way to achieve well-being in an active way.
While it is true that we all intend to seek a general sense of well-being in our lives, everyone has their own style to achieve it. Sport is, as anyone who practices it regularly knows, a great way to take care of our body and give our mind the balance it needs. It eliminates stress, detoxifies and helps us to know ourselves and overcome our limits.
Tenerife could be considered as a large stadium or a huge outdoor gym, where almost any sports practice fits. Outdoor and outdoor sports take the cake, as the climate and the territory cry out for us to go out to run, jump, swim… Or to move in the way that our body asks us to.
We are going to review some of the most popular and common options for sports in Tenerife; Whether you like to squeeze yourself to the max or just want to loosen up a little while breathing fresh air, you’re sure to find an idea that catches your eye here. And remember that there are many other nature and adventure activities apart from these that would not fit here…
Clubs, rackets, shoes and bicycles
Golf: The practice of golf has been one of the magnets of sports tourism in Tenerife for years. After all, few things are more pleasant than playing a few holes on perfectly maintained courses, in a subtropical climate under the sea breeze… Golf del Sur, Los Palos, La Rosaleda or Amarilla, among others, are well-known references in the international arena.
Tennis: When we talk about sport in Tenerife we cannot forget racket sports: tennis, paddle tennis, squash… There are numerous tennis clubs and schools on the island, mainly around Santa Cruz, Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz (not counting courts and hotel facilities). Plexipave, clay or synthetic grass, choose the one you like the most.
Running: Put on your shoes and get ready, because in Tenerife you have circuits and routes for all tastes and in very different conditions to test yourself. Speaking of races: if you like asphalt, sign up for the Santa Cruz Marathon or the Las Galetas Half Marathon, but if you prefer dirt, how about the K42 Anaga, the Bluetrail or the S/C Xtreme? Not to mention triathlon and derivatives…
Cycling: Where else in the world can you climb from 0 to 2356 meters of altitude in just thirty kilometers? Where will you find 200 kilometres of forest tracks between forests and volcanoes? Did you know that you can now get from Las Teresitas to Tacoronte using the bike lane? Whether you prefer mountain biking, road cycling, or just want a bike for a ride, welcome to paradise!
Sport is part of the journey
Sports facilities: If you like to stay in shape and are used to practicing sports on a daily basis, in Tenerife you don’t have to lose the habit. On the island there is an extensive network of sports centres, fields, tracks, swimming pools and gyms, both public and private, so that you don’t miss a beat. Check the council’s website to find what interests you most.
Sports stores: Forgot to pack your tracksuit? And where is the problem? It goes without saying that you will find numerous sports shops in Tenerife where you can find the equipment you need, no matter how specialised it may be. In addition, you can take the opportunity to spend an afternoon shopping; it is not incompatible.
Sports events: Apart from being the scene of numerous sports events and competitions of all kinds, in the Canary Islands we are lucky to have first-class sporting events. Fancy watching a top-tier European basketball game? A world championship surf exhibition? A Spanish La Liga football match? Or maybe you want to attend the 2020 Ibero-American Championships? Sport in Tenerife seen from another angle.
Native sports: Surely you have heard of Canarian wrestling, the ancestral sport of contact and grip of the islands. It is very popular in Tenerife, and it is not difficult to find plots to watch fighting. But there is also the game of the stick, the Canarian ball, the arm-wrestling of stones and, of course, the shepherd’s jump. Nobody says that you should be content with watching… Dare to participate!

Higher, Farther, Stronger
They say that sport is like any other vice; that, once you have tasted it, you cannot live without it. If so, blessed vice. We hope that it is not in Tenerife where you lose the hobby and, as you can see, if you suffer from withdrawal while you are on the island, it will be because you want to…
And, of course, that doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of your stay to get to know other facets of the island. Its natural riches, its architectural and urban heritage, its cultural heritage, its gastronomy… And, of course, you will surely find a little time to go down to the beach and tan in the sun, with the breeze and the ocean caressing you.
So come and do sports in Tenerife, and come and do many other things too: eat like here, go horseback riding, marvel among volcanoes, marvel at the night sky, take a dip in a puddle, buy yourself a treat, taste unique wines, dance in the liveliest clubs in Europe… There is time for everything!
