Weather in Tenerife: its characteristics

Tenerife’s climate (subtropical) makes the island a holiday destination that can boast of having good weather at all times of the year. In summer, the temperature is warm but not suffocating, as is the case in other areas of Spain during these months. And in winter, temperatures are characterized by being mild and temperate.

In short, normal values range between 17º in winter and 25º in summer, thus having an average annual temperature of 23º. Therefore, there are no sudden changes in temperature during the different seasons and this is thanks to different characteristics and atmospheric conditions:

Cold ocean currents.

The proximity of the Canary Islands to the Tropic of Cancer.

The trade winds.

The orography of the island.

We cannot talk about the climate of Tenerife without mentioning the microclimates. And it is that in the same day it is possible to find different weather conditions. This often surprises and causes confusion for many travelers. In the winter months it is possible to take a swim on the beach, and a few hours later be playing with the snow in the Teide National Park.

Likewise, you can also be cold in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and after traveling a few kilometers towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife, find noticeably higher temperatures. Amazing, right? The explanation for this phenomenon is the orography of the island together with the orientation (wet or dry slope). In short, the climate in Costa Adeje, for example, is different from the climate in other areas of the north of the island. Here you can check the weather by municipality.

In the coastal areas, warm temperatures predominate thanks to the influence of the sea, with an average temperature ranging between 19º and 23º. Above 600 meters and up to 1500 meters, we find somewhat colder temperatures, as well as higher humidity. And if we continue ascending we can even enjoy some snowfall in winter. The higher the altitude, the greater the contrast in temperatures between day and night. Remember that Tenerife is home to the highest point in Spain: the Teide volcano with its 3718 meters of altitude.

Local tip: it is advisable to bring some warm clothes when visiting our island, especially in the winter months. It is common to see tourists in the Teide National Park wearing clothing that is not suitable for its high mountain weather conditions. And also remember to protect yourself from the sun, since with the increase in altitude UV radiation also increases.

The climate in Costa Adeje: contrasts between the south and north of Tenerife

Of course, you can enjoy the beach every day of the year

The climate in Costa Adeje as well as in the south of Tenerife stands out for the numerous sunny days throughout the year and for the scarce rainfall. On the other hand, on the northern slope of the island there is greater humidity and rainfall is more common, although not abundant.

This generates a contrast of landscapes that surprises everyone who arrives on the island. The south, with more arid landscapes, and the north, where green tones prevail… Quite a spectacle for the eyes to walk along the different slopes of the island!

If you’re looking for sun and beach, you’ll probably prefer to stay in the south of the island. The weather in Costa Adeje (Tenerife south), as well as the weather in Los Cristianos in Tenerife south as well, is characterized by the hours of sunshine per year. Almost every day you will find blue skies and little cloudiness in the most touristic towns on the southern slope (don’t miss our article “5 things to do in the south of Tenerife”).

Of course, if you are staying in the south, do not hesitate to visit the north of the island as well. The landscape changes completely and it is worth admiring the beauty of nature, with lush forests and numerous plant species.

And don't leave without first admiring the sea of clouds from the island's peaks!

Other climatic phenomena: the sea of clouds

Thanks to the trade winds it is possible to enjoy incredible spectacles of nature such as the sea of clouds. The relief of the islands causes clouds to be trapped on the slopes of the mountains, creating this phenomenon. Perfect for immortalizing it with a photograph!

To observe the sea of clouds, you just have to ascend to the summit. First, you’ll go through the clouds once you’re ascending. Then, you will surpass them and you will be able to admire this beautiful natural effect. To be able to admire the sea of clouds and obviously, it will have to be cloudy. But otherwise, there is also a positive side, and that is that you will enjoy spectacular views.
